Jeff Thom is an experienced Litigation Counsel, whose diverse practice areas include Corporate-Commercial, Insolvency, Securities, and Oil and Gas litigation.
He acts for corporations and individuals in providing advice on and litigating complex corporate, commercial, securities and oil and gas issues, including director’s liability. He also acts on diverse other litigation matters in which his experience as senior Counsel is needed to formulate the appropriate strategy to effectively resolve such disputes.
He brings over 30 years of experience and custom legal advice to the table and is committed to delivering consistently superior service to his clients.
Jeff is an avid golfer and enjoys politics. He is a member of the Glencoe Club, Glencoe Golf and Country Club, and Kelowna Yacht Club.Professional Achievements
- Jeff was awarded his Queen’s Counsel designation from the Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta in 2002.
- He has trial and appellate experience in all levels of courts in each of the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba. He has appeared before the Federal Court of Canada, and various administrative tribunals including the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) and the Energy & Utilities Board (now the AUC and ERCB).
- His experience includes admission to the Manitoba Bar to argue two multi-provincial cases, one involving the bankruptcy of a large real estate holding company and the other the inter-provincial licencing of a health services corporation, and admission to the Ontario Bar to represent a financial institution in the Olympia and York restructuring.
- He has represented debtors and secured and unsecured creditors in insolvency and restructuring proceedings at all levels of courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
- Jeff has significant experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and has acted as Counsel in many arbitrations and mediations.
Representative Work
- Represented two creditors in Enron Canada Corp. v. Campbell’s Industrial Supply Ltd., National-Oilwell Canada Ltd., in Alta. Q.B. and Alta C.A., leave to appeal successfully dismissed by the Supreme Court of Canada 2001.
- Represented various creditors in the CCAA proceedings In the Matter of Blue Range Resources Corporation, Alta. Q.B.
- Has acted in many Alberta Securities Commission reported decisions and matters, including proceedings against Bruno Dobler, Graham Millington, Thomas Tang, Robert Sellars, William Buzan, and others.
- Has many trial decisions in the Supreme Court and Provincial Court of British Columbia, involving varied litigation matters.
