Rotation System
The rotation system at Miller Thomson ranges from formal to informal, depending on the size of the office. The goal in all of our offices is to provide students with optimum exposure to the diverse areas of law which are practised at the firm. While students are encouraged to explore all areas available to them, our programme is flexible if a student has a specific interest. Students accept work on request from any lawyer in the area to which they have been assigned. That lawyer will advise, supervise and provide feedback to the student throughout the work assignment. Miller Thomson prides itself on its people-oriented approach to problem solving and the constructive support it provides students in the completion of their assignments. Students are assigned tasks with a level of responsibility commensurate with their experience.
Technology & Support
Miller Thomson supports its students with state-of-the-art office technology, services and staff. Our libraries employ dedicated staff members who provide valuable assistance to students in their research assignments. The libraries in each location contain up-to-date digests, reports, journals and other research materials, including a wide range of CD-ROMs. In addition, students participate in introductory research seminars given by our librarians and senior lawyers and are provided with the necessary training to conduct effective online research.
Mentoring Program
Mentoring is an important aspect of the student's development. Each student has a partner or senior associate selected as their Mentor/Principal. The Mentor/Principal acts as advisor, guide, coach and teacher to create an environment in which learning and growth can occur.
Professional Development
We are committed to supporting our students in their continued professional development. Our Director of Professional Development works with our lawyers and students to develop in-house seminars covering a broad range of topics. While many of these seminars are designed specifically for students, others are part of our ongoing seminar series that focus on core and current legal issues. Students also have the opportunity to attend continuing legal education seminars outside of the firm.
Recreation & Social Events
Each of our offices organizes a number of social and recreational activities during the year. Baseball and other sports teams, as well as social functions, facilitate relationships with lawyers in the firm and student participation in firm life.
Compensation & Benefits
Miller Thomson provides an attractive compensation package comparable to firms of equal or larger size. In addition, articling students receive benefits such as a dental plan, extended health, life and disability insurance. Students are also provided with paid holiday time, the length and timing of which depends on the province.
