Our objective is to hire students who have the qualities that will enable them to become associates and, eventually, partners of Miller Thomson. We look for candidates who have achieved academic distinction, are committed to professional excellence, have a variety of interests, and are willing to take an active role in business development, community activities and firm promotion.
Each of Miller Thomson’s offices hires first- or second-year law students for our summer programs, depending on the needs of the particular office. Each office also hires articling students. We look to our students as our main source for future growth.
The rotation system at Miller Thomson ranges from formal to informal, depending on the size of the office. The goal in all our offices is to provide students with optimum exposure to the diverse areas of law practised at the firm. While students are encouraged to explore all areas available to them, our program is flexible if a student has a specific interest.
Miller Thomson does not have set hours targets for students. What we focus on is ensuring our students receive the best educational experience possible to enable them to move forward in their legal career with confidence.
Mentoring is an important aspect of a student’s development. Each student has a partner or senior associate selected as his or her Mentor/Principal. The Mentor/Principal acts as advisor, guide, coach and teacher to create an environment in which learning and growth can occur.
Miller Thomson is one of Canada’s largest law firms, with more than 525 lawyers in major city centers across Canada.
Miller Thomson provides an attractive compensation package, comparable to firms of equal or larger size. Articling students also receive benefits such as our dental plan, and extended health plans. For office-specific information, please refer to the individual office’s information on the Canadian Directory of Legal Employers website, http://www.nalpcanada.com.
We take particular pride in our informal atmosphere, which promotes effective teamwork and characterizes the comfortable working relationship between our lawyers and students. We support and are involved in a number of professional, charitable, community and athletic activities.
Students have said that what makes our firm a great place to work are the people and the open door policy of our professionals. Students say they feel a sense of belonging and collegiality in our offices, and they appreciate that lawyers and staff take an active interest in their experience at the firm.
We are committed to supporting our students in their continued professional development. We offer in-house seminars covering a broad range of topics. While many are designed specifically for students, others are part of our ongoing seminar series that focuses on core and current legal issues.
