New York City has passed a law requiring most employers to include a salary range on job postings to promote wage transparency. Geoff Mason speaks to Jas Johal on the impact of this type of legislation and whether British Columbia could follow suit:
There are a lot of different factors that go into income disparity, whether on the basis of race or gender or other protected characteristics. This type of legislation isn’t going to do much to affect gender differences in terms of certain high income roles, discrepancies in terms of maternity leaves, discrepancies in terms of education or other components of compensation packages like bonuses and stock options… There are going to be a lot of other factors that need to be taken into consideration to really address the income disparity issue broadly but the wage transparency legislation is at least a step in the right direction.
