Overview
Patrick Corney is a Partner in the Restructuring & Insolvency group at Miller Thomson LLP. Pat advises and acts for a wide range of clients regarding financial restructuring and insolvency matters, including restructurings and related court hearings under Canada’s insolvency and corporate statutes; debtor-in-possession financings; prepackaged restructuring transactions; sale processes, auctions, and related transactions; claims processes and related mediation and arbitration; forbearance agreements; and security enforcement and receiverships. Pat has significant experience in Canadian and cross-border corporate insolvency matters, including in some of the largest and most complex restructurings in Canada and related litigation. Pat has worked with clients from diverse industries, including steel, technology, retail, cannabis, and energy.
Pat began his legal career as a summer student at a Seven Sisters firm and practiced there for six years. Prior to joining Miller Thomson, Pat was a partner at a Toronto-based restructuring and insolvency boutique.

- Ernst & Young Inc. v. Essar Global Fund Ltd., et al.: Acted for Essar Steel Algoma Inc., at trial and on appeal, in a successful challenge of a liability management transaction. A 2018 Benchmark Litigation “Case of the Year”.
- Essar Steel Algoma, et al (Re): Counsel to the debtors in their $1.2B restructuring under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act.
- Fire & Flower Inc., et al (Re): Counsel to a creditor and successful auction bidder in the debtors’ Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act proceeding.
- Just Energy Group Inc., et al (Re): lead counsel for the Ontario Energy Board regarding the Just Energy Group’s CCAA proceeding.
- Ottawa Light Rail Transit Commission: special counsel to the commissioner, the Honourable Justice William Hourigan, regarding his public inquiry into every major stage of Ottawa Light Rail Transit construction project.
- Morrison Laurier Mortgage Corporation (Re): Counsel to the court-appointed liquidator, and marketing and mortgage agent, of Morrison Laurier Mortgage Corporation (a mortgage investment company).
