Thomas Sanderson’s advice on municipal and planning law matters is both thorough and practical. He has extensive experience acting for municipalities, individuals and businesses, handling a broad range of land development matters and related tribunal appeals. Thomas also drafts by-laws and agreements on topics including heritage, infrastructure, business licensing, property standards, and capital facilities. He brings compelling and strategic advocacy to disputes before the Ontario Land Tribunal, and has extensive experience in prosecution and civil litigation on municipal, construction and Building Code matters.
Thomas provides clear and practical counsel in several areas:
Land development and Environmental: Thomas acts on land development matters including subdivision projects, site plan control, zoning and holding symbols, parkland dedication, severance, minor variances, heritage, and matters involving conservation authorities.
Municipal services: Thomas advises municipal councils and staff on matters including procurement, business licensing, infrastructure maintenance, and elections.
By-laws and contracts: Thomas draws on extensive experience preparing by-laws and contracts covering a broad range of municipal activity. In focusing on client objectives, he prioritizes clear drafting and the anticipation of issues and risks before they arise.
Tribunal and Court proceedings: Thomas appears before the Ontario Land Tribunal on appeals involving site plans, minor variances, heritage designations, and zoning disputes. He has also litigated extensively on municipal matters in Ontario’s civil Courts, including on development and infrastructure projects, by-law challenges, judicial review, and Building Code Act appeals. Thomas’s prosecution experience covers building standards, fire safety, and a variety of by-laws.
